It was an ardent desire of Srila Prabhupada that “No one within a 10 mile radius of ISKCON temple should go hungry”. Taking a cue from this desire of Srila Prabhupada, The Akshaya Patra Foundation began its operations in June, 2000 in Bangalore by serving wholesome school lunch to 1,500 under-privileged children.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, Mysuru was started in the year 2005 with a make-shift kitchen to serve 2000 children covering 50 schools. This number quickly scaled up, after the inauguration of the state of the art modernized kitchen in June, 2009 by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Sri B. S. Yeddyurappa. The Akshaya Patra Foundation, Mysuru is currently serving more than 25,000 children covering nearly 190 schools. Through our mid-day meal programme, our attempt is to feed thousands of children in Mysuru who have the zeal to learn and achieve, but not the means. By feeding them that one wholesome meal a day, we give them the motivation and nourishment they need to pursue an education and a better future.

H G Madhu Pandit Dasa, the Chairman of the Akshaya Patra Foundation, was recently rewarded with Padma Shri Award on the 67th Republic Day by the Government of India. The award has been conferred in recognition of the distinguished service rendered by The Akshaya Patra Foundation for the children of India.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation works in partnership with Central and various State Governments of India to provide the mid-day meals to children in Government Schools and Government-aided schools.Currently the Foundation reaches to the underprivileged children Over 1.6 Million Children in 13,636 Schools across 12 States in India and is conferred as the World’s Largest NGO-run Mid-Day Meal Program.
